White Knight with Space Ship One attached to its underside as it rises to launch altitude
Space Ship one on re-entry. 3Gs Eyeballs in! These were the announcers last words before White Knight released Space Ship One, the rocket plane piloted by Mike Melville, as it started its ascent from 50,000 feet above the Mojave Desert to its target of 100 kilometers in altitude. About 50 seconds into the ascent, we could all see the plane starting to spin. The announcer paused and started to sound a bit nervous. Melville cut the rocket power and was able to stabilize the craft with the thrusters. After the safe landing, we learned that ground control had told Mike to turn off the rockets and forget about the record, but he hung in long enough until ground control assured him he would make the altitude required to qualify for the X prize. As he stood on Space Ship One to give the post mortem, he said the plane flew beautifully and called it a real “Burt Rutan special”, referring to the legendary designer of the plane. X-prize officials determined that he reached 337,000 feet which was almost two miles beyond the altitude necessary to qualify for the first stage of the X prize. They repeated the feat on October 4, and won the X-Prize. I was planning a trip to California, so when I heard
that Rutan’s company Scaled Composites was planning their second
launch around this time, I couldn’t resist the temptation to swing
by the Mojave Airport. Definitely worth the 15 hour drive! Happy Harvest Season! The grass is turning gold, and the weather is starting to change.
