Greetings from Matheson, Colorado!
A couple days ago, I received a book in the mail that my mother had sent me by Anthony deMello called "Awareness - the perils and opportunities of reality." In the first few pages, deMello credits Bertrand Russell with saying, "Every great idea starts out as a blasphemy." That statement couldn't be truer. And it's made me think about The Lasater Ranch and the growing health food movement that values traditional foods.
Conventional wisdom would have us believe that the world is for us to conquer, that nature must be tamed, and that modern food production requires petrochemical agriculture and insecticides in order to maximize production. The idea of working with nature, as we do, is a crazy one. It's outside the norm. However, we don't believe the current, industrialized approach is sustainable. We believe everything in nature has a roll to play, and we mean everything: coyotes, prairie dogs, pocket gophers, ants, and even weeds. This approach still hasn't been accepted by the main stream, but it is catching on and for one simple reason: it works! By working with nature, we're improving the productivity and health of the land and cattle. And the end result is a healthy product for our customers, grassfed beef, raised the way nature intended, free of pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, and growth hormones.
Another crazy idea is also catching on. A couple of weekends ago, my wife and I attended the Wise Traditions Conference held in Denver, organized by the Denver Chapter of The Weston A. Price Foundation . Sally Fallon, the author of the cookbook, "Nourishing Traditions," founded The Weston A. Price Foundation , named after a brilliant dentist and researcher who studied the benefits of pre-industrialized foods (the unrefined traditional foods of our ancestors) back in the 1930s and published his findings in his groundbreaking book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration." He actually studied 14 isolated groups of people scattered all over the world. The Weston A. Price Foundation challenges everything we've been told about food for the past 30 years and values traditional foods including raw milk, meat from grassfed animals, products made from soaked and sprouted whole grains, animal fats and other saturated fats like coconut oil, and fermented fruits and vegetables. Most people in this country would find these ideas crazy, especially in this fast food culture we live in. So for many, it's another type of blasphemy. But what could make more sense. The food we find in our grocery stores has been so over-processed and denatured that it's not even food anymore. Over 300 people attended the conference in Denver, and The Weston A. Price Foundation's national conference was attended by 900 people.
This month, we'll continue to keep the Family Sampler on special.
