Happy mid March from the Lasater Ranch! Running a bit late this month! This picture is taken from the top of a hill looking down on the Big Sandy creek which runs through the ranch for twelve miles. Once again, if you would prefer not to receive our monthly newsletter in the future, please simply reply to this email and write (Remove from List) in the Subject line. Our monthly drawing section continues to be extremely popular! The winners of the March drawing are Dan and Claire from San Francisco! The performance of the $10 coupon continues to be lackluster. I am guessing that many of you have had technical difficulties and have simply given up on the old coupon. Take heart, we have a lowtech solution! If you can’t get our fancy high falutin automatic coupon system to work, just email us the names and email addresses of 5 friends who you want to tell about Lgbeef and we will send you your coupon. (we only send your friends one email, which simply says that you wanted to recommend Lasater Grasslands Beef to them. And we don’t add them to our mailing list, so they probably won’t hate you for giving us their info!!) Here are the monthly specials for March. 1) New
York Steak special : When you purchase an order of New York Steaks,
four (4) individually packaged 8-12 ozs. each, you will receive a one
lb. package of Ground Beef Patties (four 1/4 lb.) FREE! You can order the specials online this month. Just go to www.lgbeef.com and click on the special you desire. Now that barbecue season is rolling around, I should mention that we have added a 15 pound family pack of ground beef to the offerings. There is nothing better than tossing a few lean patties on the grill on a nice evening! One of the most interesting things that I have read recently was an article about Bose Einstein Condensates in the March 7 edition of Business week. What is a Bose Einstein condensate you ask? A Bose-Einstein condensate, is a state of matter in which each of many millions of atoms act identically and are everywhere in the sample at once. Pretty cool huh? Not that I actually understand it, but those of you who are interested in quantum weirdness might want to read this article. Here is the link http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_11/b3874102.htm . The February edition of the MIT Technology Review titled, ‘10 emerging technologies that will change your world’ was quite interesting. One tidbit which I found particularly relevant was in the letter from the editor (Robert Buderi), titled ‘Thinking about thinking’. In preparing the Feb edition he asked each of these 10 cutting edge techies and scientists profiled in the articles, how they do their best thinking. One person favored the, “Open Road Strategy” in which he chooses to drive instead of fly so that he can have a long stretch of time alone to think. Another calls his one hour commute “an inadvertent bonus of the realities of modern life” . Another one talks about the creativity which is sparked from the prospectives his students bring to his work. But as Robert Buderi points out, none of these people at the forefront of science and technology mention using technology as a tool for thinking better. It is fascinating that with all of the technological advances which abound that many of the big breakthroughs still come from really smart people who have thought about something for long enough to see a connection. I recently read an article about the drought in new patents for medicines, which talked about the possibility that all of the investment in machines which try to discover new drugs by brute force may have inadvertently taken away the possibility for the serendipitous discovery which has been central to a vast majority of drug discoveries. Along a similar vein, for those of you who missed all the excitement at the self navigating vehicle competition which was sponsored by Darpa (the people who gave you the internet) here is a link to an article which describes all the fun and games. http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,62658,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_13 The basic goal was to design a vehicle which could traverse 150 miles of rough desert country without human intervention. No team won the prize money ($1 million ), most vehicles did not make it past the first mile and the longest distance traveled was less than 10 miles. So, if you have an idea on how to put your Ford or your Humvee on autopilot and point it towards Barstow, get to work! This is easy money! There has been a tremendous amount of press recently about the outsourcing of tech jobs to India recently. Don’t worry, I am not going to weigh in on either side of this political hot potato! All the news regarding this issue, made me think about a related possibility. Using instant messaging or the voice chat feature on Yahoo IM (or another one of the popular Instant Messaging programs), it would be very easy to hire an affordable online Math tutor, science tutor, accounting tutor, or any other type of tutor to teach your children, or yourself online. I don’t know if hiring tutors is very popular in the U.S., but perhaps due to the fact that it is now technologically possible and very affordable, perhaps more people will have online tutors to help them learn faster. Even a college student on a budget could afford to hire a highly qualified Math, accounting or science teacher from India or another such locale. For someone who could not otherwise afford a local tutor, the possibility of hiring a Phd. in math to tutor you or your children in math seems like a great opportunity! This technology cuts both ways! If you are an English teacher in the U.S. for instance you could pick up a bit of extra work by teaching a class of 20 students in China. They might not have access to a native English speaker locally, but for a very modest price (your fee/20 students) they can have access to an expert native speaking English teacher. If anyone wants to try to find an online tutor, or if you want to tutor people online, you might want to go to Google and search for “math tutor”, “science tutor” etc., etc. and see what sites are dedicated to this purpose. You can also hop on over to www.teachermania.net and post an ad in the Teaching jobs section or the Teachers available section (disclaimer: this site is very new and the results might not be very good right now. It is also my website, so I might have a very, very small bias towards this site!). Best Wishes,
