Perhaps the most exciting development on the "slow-food" front is Michael Pollan's new book, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals . Beautifully written and as entertaining as a novel, Pollan's book explores the most basic of questions: What should we eat? And what are the social, economic, political, and moral implications of what we eat? Pollan says that the act of eating should be our most profound experience with nature, and yet, as our food has become industrialized, we have become less connected with nature. By exploring these questions, Pollan discovers how and why the food we eat has changed. It's all in his book, the story of food, from the corn-feeding of cattle to the food scientists who doctor our breakfast cereals. It's an incredible story, shocking, unbelievable, and sad, all at the same time. I had the opportunity to see Michael Pollan when he came to We are voting every time we eat.
