Greetings from Matheson, Colorado !

Many of you may not know that the Lasater Ranch has been a wildlife sanctuary for over 50 years as well as a sustainable cattle ranch.  We believe the balance of nature is vital to the shortgrass prairie.  So our cattle share the land with pronghorn antelope, deer, coyotes, foxes, porcupines, many burrowing animals like pocket gophers, countless bird species, and so on.  Everything has a role to play in this dynamic ecosystem.  We don't kill predators like coyotes, and we don't use fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.  In a very real sense, the cattle live off the land just as the wild animals do, using the land as their resource.

Recently, the Colorado Division of Wildlife began a study to learn more about the swift fox, a small, slender prairie mammal about the size of a house cat.  Swift foxes reside over most of the Great Plains, and although their numbers have declined over the last one hundred years, the eastern plains of Colorado is their stronghold.  Like coyotes, they feed on jackrabbits, prairie dogs, and small rodents.  Because they are nocturnal and threatened by coyotes, they are rarely seen, and we weren't even aware that we had so many here until the Division of Wildlife trapped and released several a few months ago at the Lasater Ranch.

One morning, when the Division of Wildlife checked the traps, my wife and I and our two young girls were able to go along.  That morning they had trapped two swift foxes, and we were able to get a close look at them.  After they took various measurements, a blood sample, and inserted a small electronic marker under their skin, they let them go and I was able to get some incredible photos (one pictured above).  This little guy only weighed five pounds, and that's about as big as they get.

The small wonders of nature are often larger than we can comprehend.  Each native creature of the shortgrass prairie has an important role to play.  It's our job to manage the cattle so they graze the prairie grasses just as wild Bison did years ago.  In that way, cattle can coexist with nature, and the end result for you is nature's best beef.
