Dear Customer,

Greetings from the Lasater Ranch!

Please excuse the intrusion into your busy life. This is the first monthly newsletter which
we will be sending to our customers. If you would prefer not to receive our email in the future, please simply reply to this email and write (Remove from List) in the Subject line. We take your privacy seriously and certainly don't want to be a bother to you unless you enjoy what we have to say and offer.

What will be in our monthly newsletter? It will contain a special offer for that month
as well as some far ranging and potentially interesting tidbits. The possible topics are endless, but may include: 1. Organic food related ideas (tips on other great like minded products, comments, suggestions), 2. Book recommendations (on any topic) , 3. Interesting articles that we've read (once again, wide ranging), 4. Suggestions on interesting Blogs (know a great Blog, let us know), and 5. Ideas on sustainable agriculture, organic ranching/farming, etc. Please send us your ideas!

This months promotions are as follows: If you order our 1) Family Sampler, we will throw in 2 extra roasts for free. 2) 1/2 Sampler, 1 extra roast thrown in, and 3) N.Y. Strip order (4 @ $35), 2 lbs of ground beef for free. In order to take advantage of this offer, please call your order in to

When we started selling our beef directly to consumers in 1995, I believe it is accurate to
say that there were maybe one or two other people selling truly organic beef on the internet. Since then the market has exploded. Today, if you go to Google and search for Grassfed beef, there are literally hundreds of suppliers listed. This is a fantastic trend and we hope it continues because we believe that Organic Free Range Grass Fed beef is much tastier, better for you and better for the environment.

The only caveat to this trend is that there is a tremendous amount of misrepresentation by companies about their true Ranching practices. This is allowed by the very vague and porous definitions of Organic and Natural, and all the other monikers which companies use. There has been plenty written about this elsewhere and we don't want to bore you with the minutia of this issue. The only comment we have is that when you buy Organic Food or "Natural" food, the old remember your latin, ''caveat emptor''. You really have to do your own research and find out everything you can about the product. One great way to do that is to do a google search (what is now popularly called googling) on the company or the product. You can really find an incredible amount of information in this way. You can see if this company has gotten good press from a credible news source. If they have been in business for a while, you will see loads of history about their company and product as well as see what kinds of sites recommend their product etc. Attached are the links for the google search on Lasater Grasslands Beef and the Lasater Ranch. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=lasater+grasslands+beef

There are many great organizations sprouting around the world whose purpose is to promote delicious locally grown products which often times can only be found in one area, or region of the world. This great variety is really in danger of being lost, as the making of some of these products is really an art. One of these organizations which we think is doing a fantastic job is the Slow Food movement which started in Italy and is now spreading to many areas of the world. If this kind of thing floats your boat, I would recommend that you visit www.slowfood.com and read about their organization.

Since this is our first newsletter we have quite a backlog of ideas on reading material. We'll try to control ourselves and save some for the months to come. If you've been to our website recently, you will know that we are big fans of Eric Schlosser. He is a hard hitting writer, and he picks some very interesting topics. In addition to Eric's first book, Fast Food Nation, you may find his latest book Reefer Madness to be an interesting read. Agree, or disagree, Eric will make you think.

Of course in another act of shameless self promotion, we would be remiss not to point you to the wonderful article on Grass fed beef in the Atlantic Monthly a few months ago. http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2003/05/kummer.htm . All press is good press, but this was especially good!

Any science geeks out there? If you aren't a regular reader of Discover magazine, you should be! I highly recommend that you run down to the local library and pick up a copy of the August 2003 issue. Cover story ''Can we rocket to another star?'' Truly mind blowing stuff.

If you have a faster internet connection than we have at the ranch (you need broadband and a fairly new computer for this), you might want to check out www.skype.com. This is the state of the art brand spankin new computer to computer voice application. I have downloaded and installed the software and it was very easy. No technical skill required. I haven't tried it yet, because as I said our connection isn't fast enough, but the word is that it is better quality than POTS (plain old telephone service). If its true, watch out big Telco!

Staying on the technology theme and in the great software tradition of vaporware (the practice of announcing amazing life changing software which is not yet available), you will want to check the www.lgbeef.com website frequently as we are adding some sections which may or may not be of interest to you. This monthly newsletter and its related promotion will be online and there will also be message boards and chat rooms where you can talk with each other. Additionally, there may be special promotions which will be updated more frequently than our monthly newsletter. So, check the site and pounce on the promotions when they appear! Not life changing, we know, just thought we'd let you know!
Well, that is about the sum of it around here, the only thing left is a friendly request! If you like our product, please tell all of your friends about Lasater Grasslands Beef! Word of mouth is by far the best way other people can learn about our product so, if you like our product, don't be shy! We enjoy providing you with this product and we need all your help to spread the good word.

Sunny October days, and we haven't had the first big snow fall of the year. Until next month.

Hasta Luego,

Tom Lasater
